Houston Zoo Centennial Documentary to Premiere at Zoo Ball on Saturday, October 22
Rolando Guajardo Returns to the Houston Zoo to Produce and Direct Documentary

HOUSTON, Texas, October 19, 2022 — Attendees of this Saturday’s Houston Zoo Ball 2022, Once in Lifetime, will be treated to a special 10-minute centennial documentary which traces the origins of the Houston Zoo back to 1922 and a lone buffalo named Earl.

After executing a successful and fully-virtual Zoo Ball in 2020, Rolando Guajardo of Constell Media returns to the Houston Zoo to produce and direct this epic 100 year story. Guajardo shares, “As a native Houstonian, I couldn’t be more proud to tell this story. Not only is the Houston Zoo one of our city’s most beloved institutions but it also plays a role in so many cherished childhood memories. Listening to the stories and reviewing archival photos was fascinating. The Houston Zoo has really stood the test of time and has been completely transformed by our generous community.”

The film highlights how the Houston Zoo wildlife conservation efforts have grown from the 1970s breeding programs to the expansive global programs of today. “Many people might just think of a zoo as a place to see animals but the Houston Zoo has taken that experience to another level by integrating conservation efforts made possible by just visiting the zoo. I learned a great deal about the amazing partnerships and programs that are happening behind-the-scenes and all over the world. Interviewing Dr. Olivier Nsengimana of the Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association was a treat because of his passion for saving wildlife and how he wins the hearts of his community regarding their ecosystem,” says Guajardo.

The short film features Lee Ehmke, President & CEO; Kevin Hodge, VP of Animal Programs; Renee Bumpus, Former Senior Director of Wildlife Conservation; Dr. Olivier Nsengimana, Founder & Executive Director of Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association; Nick Espinosa, Senior VP of Institutional Advancement; and Bill Shrader, VP & Director of the John P. McGovern Foundation and will conclude by honoring Zoo Ball 2022 honoree, Mrs. Kathrine McGovern.

The centennial documentary will premiere this Saturday, October 22 at Houston Zoo Ball 2022.
